GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – Apr. 17, 2014) — Freshman Joao De Silveria (Sao Paulo, Brazil) tallied a 7-5, 6-1 win in the No. 5 singles match to give the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves their only point in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's tennis match against NCAA Tournament hopeful Colorado Mesa University, Thursday afternoon at the Mavericks' Elliott Tennis Center.
De Silveria defeated CMU's Trevor Brown and is now a perfect 4-0 in RMAC singles matches this spring. He has won five straight overall and is 8-3 on the year.
The Mavericks' 8-1 win allowed them to solidify their No. 2 seed for the RMAC Tournament, which they will host beginning Friday morning. The Mavericks, who were also ranked fifth in this week's NCAA Division II South Central Regional Rankings, improved to 12-8 overall and to 4-1 in the RMAC.
The Pack, who were supposed to play the Mavericks at home on Sunday before a snow storm postponed and moved the match, completed the regular season with 6-12 overall and 2-3 RMAC records. They will be the No. 4 seed in the tournament and will take on fifth-seeded Montana State-Billings in the opening round at 11 a.m. The winner will face RMAC Regular Season Champion Western New Mexico in the Friday evening (5 p.m.) semifinal while the loser will wrap up the season with a fifth place match, which would be played at 3 p.m. at the tournament's second site — Canyon View Park.
Just two weeks ago, CSU-Pueblo claimed a 6-3 win at Montana State-Billings. They then dropped a narrow 5-4 decision to Western New Mexico at home last Saturday (Mar. 12).
