PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – Mar. 9, 2014) — After playing their first five matches of the spring on the road, the Colorado State University-Pueblo men's tennis team made the most of the home court advantage blanking Colorado College, 9-0 in their home-opener to earn their first win of the season. The ThunderWolves then won all three necessary split-set tiebreakers while pushing nationally-ranked St. Edward's (Texas) University to the limit, falling just 5-4 in their later match of a Sunday twin-bill played in ideal weather conditions at Pueblo City Park.
In the morning match against the Tigers, five of the Pack's six players recorded at least one 6-0 set win in a dominating singles effort. Alexandro Moncayo-Samperio (Sr., Veracruz, Mexico) held his opponent Dylan Ball scoreless in both sets of his win at No. 5.
The ThunderWolves also won all three doubles matches although Moncayo-Samperio and Sergio Avella (Fr., Sogamoso, Colombia) had to battle to a 9-8 win at No. 2.
In the afternoon encounter against the 24th-ranked Hilltoppers, the Pack dropped all three doubles matches. However, Avella picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Pedro Bronstrup at No. 3 singles while Emir Machado (Fr., Caracas, Venezuela), Moncayo-Samperio and Marcelo Chaparro (So., Bogota, Colombia) all won tie-breakers after splitting two sets with their opponents in the No. 2, 4 and 5 singles matches.
The Hilltoppers, who improved to 5-5 overall with the narrow victory, are ranked third in the latest ITA NCAA Division II South Central Regional Rankings while the ThunderWolves, who went 0-4 in previous regulation matches, are ranked ninth. St. Edward's had posted a 7-2 win at Metro State on Saturday.
Colorado College is now 1-1.
The Pack will remain at home for their next match, facing Wartburg (Iowa) on Wednesday.
