PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – Mar. 28, 2014) — The Colorado State University-Pueblo women's tennis team swept the doubles matches and clinched the match with two early singles wins en-route to a 5-4 non-conference victory over visiting Arizona Christian University on Friday morning here at the Pueblo City Park courts.
The ThunderWolves improved to 6-7 overall and to 4-2 this spring with their third home win of the campaign while the NAIA Firestorm fell to 7-9 as they begin a 3-match swing through the state that will see them play at Colorado Christian and Colorado College over the next two days.
The doubles sweep was the Pack's third in the last four matches and proved to be the spark that coach Mark Schlief's squad needed. Toni Alvarez (So., Pueblo, Colo.) and Sarah Coy (Fr., Pueblo West, Colo.) were 8-4 winners at the No. 1 position while Gia Montoya (So., Pueblo, Colo.) and Brooke Trevithick (So., Pueblo, Colo.) claimed a 9-7 win at No. 2. Teresa Haro (So., Monument, Colo.) and Brittani Trevithick (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) were 8-6 winners at No. 3 doubles.
In the singles, Montoya and Haro gave the Pack the early and match-clinching wins, which put the ThunderWolves ahead 5-1.
Montoya snapped a 6-match slide with her 6-0, 6-2 thumping of Isabella Diaz, ranked 17th in the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) NAIA West Region Rankings at No. 2. Meanwhile, Haro won for the sixth time in seven matches at No. 5, defeating Brianna Lopez, 6-2, 6-0.
Ana Jutrisa (Rogatec, Slovenia) also won for the Pack, defeating Greer Forseth in an extra exhibition singles match by a 6-2, 6-4 margin.
The ThunderWolves will host Lindenwood (Mo.) University on Monday at 3 p.m. before returning to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play in April.
