PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – Mar. 28, 2014) — Joao De Silveria (Fr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) returned from injury to win a pair of matches in the morning as the Colorado State University-Pueblo men's tennis team defeated Arizona Christian University, 5-4, before falling to No. 50 Sonoma State (Calif.), 9-0 in the afternoon match on Friday here at the Pueblo City Park courts.
The split left the Pack with a 4-8 overall record.
De Silveria, who had not played since Mar. 1, teamed with Marcelo Chaparro (So., Bogota, Colombia) to claim a 9-7 No. 2 doubles win over ACU's David Castano and Adam West and then posted a key 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles over West.
The ThunderWolves also took a 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles thanks to Saul Shrom (Sr., Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) and Emir Machado (Fr., Caracas, Venezuela) and led 2-1 through the doubles before extending the lead to 5-1 with straight-set wins by Sergio Avella (Fr., Sogamoso, Colombia), Trung Le (Jr., Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam) and De Silveria in the singles tilts.
The Firestorm (7-7) then won three tight singles matches, including two in 10-point tiebreakers to make the final score more respectable.
Avella had the easiest time defeating Castano, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 3 singles match and has now won six of his last seven singles outings. Le also claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Tyler Cawthorne at No. 4 singles.
In the afternoon against the nationally-ranked and now 6-8 Seawolves, Chaparro was the only Pack player to win a set, taking a 7-6 (7-5) second set win over Logan Liddell at No. 5 singles before succumbing 10-7 in the split-set tiebreaker. Chaparro and De Silveria also battled in the No. 2 doubles match but dropped it 9-7 to Sonoma State's Jimmy Manning and Seth Hein.
The ThunderWolves will remain at home and will face Holy Names (Calif.) on Sunday at 10 a.m. before hosting 47th-ranked Lindenwood (Mo.) on Monday at 3 p.m.
