Pack men dominate CCU in first RMAC match

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – Mar. 14, 2014) — The Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolf men's tennis team dominated Colorado Christian University on Friday winning all three doubles matches and all six singles matches in straight sets to post a 9-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opening win over the host Cougars, Friday afternoon here at Lakewood Park.

The Pack improved to 3-6 overall while the Cougars, who won just four combined games in the No. 2-6 singles spots fell to 0-5 overall and to 0-1 in conference play.

In their three wins over the last six days, the Pack have won 26 of 27 matches.   They also scored six combined match wins against 24th-ranked NCAA Division II squad St. Edward's (Texas), who they hosted last Sunday, and 15th-ranked NAIA squad Bethany (Kan.), who they played Thursday in Denver.

On Friday, in what was their third match in as many days and their fifth since last Sunday, the Pack gave up just six combined games in the doubles matches.  Saul Shrom (Sr., Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) and reigning RMAC Player of the Week Emir Machado (Fr., Caracas, Venezuela) won 8-2 over Santiago De La Rosa and Dillon Etter at No. 1 doubles while Trung Le (Jr., Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam) and Marcelo Chaparro (So., Bogota, Colombia) claimed an 8-4 win over Wesley Jones and David Horner in the No. 2 spot.

Sergio Avella (Fr., Sogamoso, Colombia) and Alexandro Moncayo-Samperio (Sr., Veracruz, Mexico) also shutout Jon Woods and Matt Walberer in the No. 3 doubles match.

In the singles, Moncayo-Samperio also recorded a shutout 6-0, 6-0 win over Woods in the No. 5 match while Avella won his fifth straight singles match while improving to 10-5 on the year with a 6-0, 6-1 demolition of Horner at No. 3 singles.

Machado had nearly as an easy of a time at No. 2 singles as he also defeated Etter, 6-2, 6-0.  Chaparro also extended his winning streak to five straight at singles as he blanked Walberer, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 flight.

Meanwhile, Le scored a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jones at No. 4 singles.  Shrom then completed the overall shutout with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win over De La Rosa at No. 1 singles.

The Pack will now get a bit of a break before starting a 5-match home-stand next Friday (Mar. 21) against Newman (Kan.).
