Pack use doubles sweep, singles depth to claim 7-2 win over Wartburg

PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – Mar. 12, 2014) — The Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves used a doubles sweep and their depth in the singles to record a 7-2 women's tennis victory over visiting Wartburg (College) Iowa, Wednesday afternoon here at the Pueblo City Park courts.

After sweeping all three doubles matches, the Pack gave up just eight total games in as many sets to take singles wins at No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 while improving to 4-6 with their second home win in four days.

Wartburg, playing for the first time this spring, fell to 7-4 on the academic year.

Gia Montoya (So., Pueblo, Colo.) and Brooke Trevithick (So., Pueblo, Colo.) had the easiest time in the doubles as they shutout (8-0) Wartburg's Marissa Buresh and Jessica Behrer in the No. 2 match while Toni Alvarez (So., Pueblo, Colo.) and Sarah Coy (Fr., Pueblo West, Colo.) claimed an 8-2 win at No. 1 over Melissa Davis and Liz Rucker.

Brittani Trevithick (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) and Teresa Haro (So., Monument, Colo.), named as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Week earlier in the day, then completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 3 over Katherine Ross and Berit Seeburg.

In the singles matches, Coy scored a 6-1, 6-0 win over Emily Rasmussen at No. 3 while Brooke Trevithick claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win over Behrer at No. 4.

Haro, who extended her singles winning streak to four dating back to the fall, gave up just one game in each set of her No. 5 win over Liz Rucker while Brittani Trevithick improved to 3-0 on the spring  in singles with an easy  6-0, 6-1 over Buresh at No. 6.

The ThunderWolves' Ana Jutrisa (Sr., Rogatec, Slovenia) also saw her first action of her collegiate career, claiming a 6-1, 6-3 extra-match win over Wartburg's Carly Sis.

Ross and Davis were the two Knight players to win matches as Ross scored a 6-1, 6-2 win over Alvarez at No. 1 singles while Davis came from behind for a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 win over Montoya at No. 2.

The Pack will next play their only road match of March when they begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at Colorado Christian on Friday at 12:30 p.m., in a match that was rescheduled from a week earlier.
