Women's Tennis Splits Neutral-Site Matches in Texas, Defeat Southwest Baptist 4-3 Before Falling to UT Permian Basin

RICHARDSON, Texas – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis team split a pair of neutral-site matches here Sunday at the UTD Tennis Courts, opening the day with a 4-3 victory over Southwest Baptist University before dropping a 4-0 decision to the University of Texas Permian Basin.

With the split, the ThunderWolves move to 1-10 on the 2025-26 season.

Sunday's win against Southwest Baptist was the first for the ThunderWolves against an NCAA Division II school since earning a 7-2 win over Colorado Christian on April 7, 2018, a span of 2,892 days or seven years, 11 months, and one day. Last season, the Pack picked up two dual victories against NAIA schools.

The Pack opened Sunday's action with its first victory of the season, using a strong doubles showing and three singles wins to edge Southwest Baptist.

In Sunday's match, the two teams starting out playing singles and the Pack picked up its first win at the No. 6 spot as sophomore MaKayla Martinez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo County) earned a win by default.

SBU (1-9) would tie the match at 1-1 following Defne Ursan's 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over freshman Fernanda Martinez (Queretaro, Mexas/International School of Queretaro) and take a 2-1 lead after Sammi Liu defeated senior Margot Aebischer (Etupes, France/Eastern Arizona College), 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot.

The Bearcats took a 3-1 lead in the match thanks to Isabella Canedo's 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot over senior Bella Hernandez (Rocklin, Calif./MSU Denver).

Junior Yelena Travica (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Maples Collegiate) gave the Pack its second win in singles at the No. 4 spot in the line-up as she earned a 6-2, 6-2 straight win over Olivia McGruder.

The Pack tied the match at 3-3 following a win at the No. 5 singles spot from senior Laney Reddick (Sacramento, Calif./MSU Denver) as Reddick defeated Ally Bowser in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

With the match tied, the two teams shifted their focus to doubles, with either team in position to win.

In doubles, the Pack won at No. 3 by default, and all they needed was to win at either the No. 1 or No. 2 spot to secure the match win, and the Pack was able to get that win at No. 2 doubles to secure the victory.

At No. 2 doubles, Hernandez and Reddick picked up a 6-3 win over Liu and McGruber to seal the victory.

The No. 1 doubles team of Aebischer and Martinez was trailing 4-3 in their match against Ursan and Canedo.

UT Permian Basin 4, CSU Pueblo 0
In the afternoon matchup, UT Permian Basin took control early and secured the sweep with the doubles point and three completed singles matches, as the match ended once the Falcons secured the four points necessary to win.

UTPB (2-7) opened the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Hernandez and Reddick were leading 5-2 at the No. 2 double spot over Dinethya Dharmaratne and Mattea Bowe when the doubles points was earned.

The Falcons then secured the victory with straight sets at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 singles to post the 4-0 victory.

The other three singles matches were unfinished when UTPB won at No. 2 singles to secure the match victory.  

At No. 1 singles, Aebischer was in the third set with Fanny Bergstrom as she lost the first set, 6-2, and then won the second set, 6-4, and Bergstrom led 1-0 in the third set.

 Reddick trailed 4-0 in the second set at No. 5 singles against Alyssa Glasgow, and MaKayla Martinez lost the first set 6-0 at No. 6 singles against Paige Sitanggang.

The Pack will return to action next weekend as they travel to Hays, Kan., for a 2 p.m. MT match on Friday, March 13, at Fort Hays State and then plays an exhibition match on Saturday, March 14, at 12 p.m. MT against Barton County Community College.
