RIVERSIDE, Calif. (GoThunderWolves.com – Feb. 22, 2013) – A 5-run eighth inning lifted the 10th-ranked California Baptist University Lancers to a 6-1 win and a series sweep of the Colorado State University-Pueblo baseball team, Saturday afternoon here at Totman Stadium.
The Lancers, who improved to 14-0 this year while winning their 23rd straight game dating back to last season, overcame an early 1-0 deficit with a single fourth inning-run and then exploded in the latter stages of the game as the first eight Lancers in what was a 4-hit inning reached.
CSU-Pueblo, led by three hits from Scott Hoyt (Sr., Longmont, Colo.), fell to 4-6 on the season.
Thanks to an error and a passed ball in the top of the third, the Pack drew first blood on a Dominick Bregar (So., Pueblo, Colo.) sacrifice fly. Hoyt then hit a 2-out triple but was left stranded.
The Lancers then tied the game on an RBI groundout as starting pitchers Lonny Schoon (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Tyson Miller battled into the eighth.
Despite getting the first two outs of the eighth, Mack then gave way to the bullpen as the Pack loaded the bases against two Lancer relievers. However, Ethan Mack entered and got of the jam with a strikeout. That momentum then carried over to the bottom of the inning as two walks, four singles and an CSU-Pueblo error spelled doom for the visitors.
Mack then remained in and allowed a hit and a hit by pitch to the ThunderWolves in the ninth, but did enough to earn the win in what was his first decision of the year.
Schoon suffered the loss for CSU-Pueblo, falling to 1-1.
The ThunderWolves finished with seven hits while the Lancers banged out 10.
The Pack will now return home to Colorado and will begin defense of their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Plains Division and Tournament titles on Friday (Feb. 28) at Metro State.
