SAN ANTONIO, Texas (November 29, 2014) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo women's basketball team dropped its second game in as many days at the St. Mary's Classic, falling to Angelo State University, 72-64, at Bill Greehey Arena.
With the loss, the ThunderWolves drop to 2-2 on the season and fall to 2-3 all-time against the Rams. Angelo State picks up its first victory of the year, improving to 1-4 overall.
Angelo State held the shooting advantage over the Pack, posting a 45.9 (28-of-61) percent field-goal percentage and a 78.6 (11-of-14) mark from the free-throw line. The ThunderWolves recorded a 37.9 (25-of-66) shooting percentage and 56.3 (9-of-16) tally from the charity stripe. Both teams finished the game with five three pointers made.
The remaining statistical categories were close, as CSU-Pueblo held the edge in assists (13-11) and steals (9-7), while the Rams owned the advantage in rebounds (40-39) and blocks (3-2).
Ashley Piper (Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) recorded her second 20-point game of the season for the ThunderWolves, finishing with a team-high 20 points. Piper also paced the Pack in rebounds (8) and steals (4). Katie Nehf (Sr., Broomfield, Colo.) also scored in double figures for CSU-Pueblo, tallying 19 points and a team-high four assists.
Jasmine Caston led four Angelo State players in double-figure scoring with a game-high 26 points. Caston also chipped in four steals, three assists and six rebounds. Diamalises Rivera led the Rams in rebounds with seven.
The Pack jumped out to an early 4-2 advantage, but Angelo State used an extended 15-3 scoring run to go on top by 10 at 17-7 with 10:53 showing on the game clock.
The Rams pushed extended their lead to 12, its largest advantage of the first half, at the 6:21 mark.
CSU-Pueblo closed the gap going into the halftime break, finishing the opening period on a 7-2 spurt to trail 32-25.
The ThunderWolves carried their momentum from the final minutes of the first half into the opening minutes of the second stanza. CSU-Pueblo used a 12-0 run to begin the second half to move ahead, 37-32, with 4:32 elapsed in the half. Nehf scored five points during the run and Dee Arrieta (Jr., Pueblo West, Colo.) added a three-point basket.
Over the next 3:55, Angelo State regained the lead thanks to a 10-2 spurt.
The Pack continued to play the Rams tight over the next several minutes, trailing by just one, 50-49, with 7:48 left in regulation.
The one-point deficit was as close as the ThunderWolves got the remainder of the contest as Angelo State finished the game by scoring 22 of the final 36 points to earn the 72-64 victory.
With its nonconference schedule complete, CSU-Pueblo now turns its attention to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference portion of its schedule. The ThunderWolves open up RMAC play with four consecutive home games, beginning Dec. 5 against Adams State University at 5:30 p.m.
