Cowell's cycle powers Pack to dominant sweep, one win away from title

PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - May 4, 2013) - It's not often that a doubleheader sweep of a conference rival in which you win by a combined score of 42-2 is overshadowed.

But Curtis Cowell (Sr., Monrovia, Calif.) certainly made sure of that, hitting for the cycle for the first time in school history as part of an amazing 7-for-9 day, reaching base in a remarkable 11 of 12 at bats and scoring seven total runs, knocking in a combined eight runs.

Cowell's heroics were the exclamation point on a downright dominant day as the ThunderWolves scored 42 runs on 36 hits, compared to two runs on 14 hits by Adams State.  In fact, in the first game, CSU-Pueblo almost came away with a 25-0 win if it weren't for a 7th inning sacrifice fly, in which a diving catch in foul territory by Cowell in leftfield opened up Dillon Bollig to score from third.

Also turning in a remarkable performance was Chase Lacomb (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.), who excelled from the leadoff position, going a combined 3-for-4, but drawing five total walks.  In nine total plate appearances, he got on base eight times.

On the mound, Lonny Schoon (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Mike Fabrizio (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) each got wins.  In Fabrizio's game, he lasted five innings and struck out three, improving to 6-1 on the year and gathering his sixth straight win since returning to the rotation following an early-season injury.

Even with the overall dominance, the best takeaway from the game was the postseason implications.  Thanks to a New Mexico Highlands loss Saturday, CSU-Pueblo surged into first place in the RMAC Plains Division, and now is in charge of its own destiny for a division title.  With a win or a Highlands loss Sunday, the Pack will claim its first division title since 2009 as well as a two-seed in the RMAC Tournament.

The Pack's surge for a Plains Division title will take place Sunday as the ThunderWolves close its regular season with a noon start against Adams State.
