GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - April 5, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo saw a lead slip away after giving up a six-run inning as the ThunderWolves fell 11-6 to the 8th-ranked Mavericks in Grand Junction.
CSU-Pueblo used a hot start, riding six runs in the first five innings, headlined by a Scott Hoyt (Jr., Longmont, Colo.) home run, to take a 6-4 lead at the end of five innings. Starting pitcher Lonny Schoon (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) gave up four runs on seven hits over the first five innings to hold the Mavericks' offense at bay.
But it all broke down in the sixth as small mistakes mushroomed into a six-run inning. Mesa got two men on on bunt singles and benefitted from two walks, a balk and wild pitch as the Mavericks quickly took the game over and sank the Pack. Reeling from the big inning, CSU-Pueblo would only get one hit over the remainder of the game.
CSU-Pueblo falls to 15-13 after the loss and 11-8 in RMAC play, a full game behind New Mexico Highlands for first place in the RMAC Plains Division.
The series will continue Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Grand Junction's Suplizio Field.
