LAS VEGAS, N.M. (GoThunderWolves.com - April 27, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo missed a shot to overtake New Mexico Highlands in the RMAC Plains Division standings, but still claimed a win, splitting a doubleheader with the Cowboys Saturday.
The Pack fired on all cylinders in the opening game as Mike Fabrizio (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) won his fifth straight start, allowing just two runs on seven hits as the Pack claimed an 8-2 win. While Fabrizio dealt, Dominick Bregar (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) and Brandon Evans (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) stayed hot at the plate as Bregar collected three singles in a 3-for-4 while Evans went 2-for-3. But nobody was bigger than Michael Wagner (So., Golden, Colo.), who went 3-for-4 and collected eight total bases, turning in two doubles and a home run, knocking in two runs.
The Pack wasn't as successful in the second game as it spotted Highlands a 7-0 lead after two innings, and despite outplaying the Cowboys over the game's final five innings, still fell 13-8.
The ThunderWolves plated five runs in the third inning and tied the game at 7-7 on a two-run single by Brett Montague (San Mateo, Calif.) in the fifth.
But New Mexico Highlands responded in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run inning, going up 9-7 and putting the game away for good by adding four more in the sixth inning.
The Pack recorded 12 hits in the second game, including a three-hit game from Cameron Buckles (Jr., Parker, Colo.), another two hits from Wagner, and a 2-for-4 game from Mario Sanchez (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) who had a double and a home run.
The ThunderWolves and Cowboys will conclude its series Sunday with a nine-inning contest, starting at noon.
