ThunderWolves playing for highest RMAC finish since 2006

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - April 20, 2013) - The CSU-Pueblo women's tennis team claimed its first RMAC Tournament win since 2006, advancing to the RMAC third-place match Sunday at the Elliott Tennis Center in Grand Junction.

CSU-Pueblo, which hadn't won an RMAC Tournament match since it won the RMAC Tournament championship in 2006, bested Montana State-Billings 5-1 in the opening match.  CSU-Pueblo entered the tournament as the four-seed and Billings was the five-seed.

"It was the best I've seen us play all year long," Pack coach Brad Gerler said.  "It was our most complete performance in a match."

The match broke for CSU-Pueblo after it took two of the three doubles matches, including a decisive 8-1 win at one-doubles by Katie Howe (So., Pueblo, Colo.) and Gia Montoya (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.), then kept it going in singles play.  The middle of the lineup delivered the victory as a pair of straight-set wins at four- and five-singles by Toni Alvarez (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) and Montoya set up the decisive win at three-singles by Brooke Trevithick (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.).  Trevithick came back from a 6-4 defeat in the first set to dominate, winning 6-0 and 6-3.

In the RMAC semifinal match against one-seed Western New Mexico, though, CSU-Pueblo did get a view of where it wants to be in the coming years as the Mustangs downed the ThunderWolves 5-0.  The Pack was downed in all three doubles matches and the match was clinched with two straight-set singles losses.

Despite the loss, however, CSU-Pueblo does earn a berth in the consolation third-place match against Metro State.  Two-seeded Metro State was defeated in a slight upset by three-seed Colorado Mesa Saturday.

No matter what occurs, the Pack will finish with its highest RMAC Tournament finish since 2006.  Since, it has only topped out at 5th multiple times, which is where it topped out last season.

The Pack's third-place match begins at 9 a.m. Sunday.
