ALAMOSA, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - March 16, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo head coach Stan Sanchez gathered his 1,000th career win Saturday as Pack pitchers baffled Adams State hitters in claiming 7-0 and 4-1 wins.
CSU-Pueblo starting pitchers held Adams State to a grand total of seven hits over 14 innings Saturday, wiping the sour taste left from a walk-off loss the Grizzlies Friday.
Lonny Schoon (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) turned in his second two-hit complete game win in his past three appearances, striking out a career-high eight while allowing just one walk. After Saturday's appearance, Schoon is cruising this season, boasting a 2-1 record with a 3.29 ERA, 22 strikeouts in 22-1/3 innings and a WHIP of 0.84. Schoon also performed a rarity, hitting for himself in the lineup out of the pitcher's slot, marking the first time since 2005 a Pack starting pitcher has hit for himself.
Schoon benefited from seven Pack runs, which was headlined by a three-run home run from Scott Hoyt (Jr., Longmont, Colo.), who was 2-for-4 in the first game.
In the second game, Sean Gavin (Sr., Canyon Country, Calif.) was masterful, allowing five hits and striking out six in claiming his first elusive win of the season. Gavin got run support thanks to good old-fashioned manufactured runs, plating its first run on a sacrifice bunt by Wade Beauvais (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) followed by a gift run from an error and two RBI singles by Cameron Hart (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif.) and Mike Knueppel (Sr., Spencer, Iowa).
With the two wins, Sanchez moves his career win total, counting junior college and high school wins, to 1,000. As a collegiate coach, he's at 664 wins at CSU-Pueblo.
The ThunderWolves will finish off its series at Adams State Sunday with a noon nine-inning contest.
