PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - March 15, 2013) - With five of nine matches going to tiebreaks, CSU-Pueblo couldn't come away with a win in a very tightly contested dual, losing 5-4 to Metro State.
Metro State would come away with three of the five tiebreak matches, with the stage for the day being set by the one-doubles match.
Saul Shrom (Jr., Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) and Alex Lesiuk (Sr., Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) disposed of Adrien Delvaux and Gabriel Vlahos 10-8, with an epic 17-15 tiebreak.
However, as the one-doubles combo had to face each other again in singles matches, Metro State had the final say, claiming big wins that turned the tide. Shrom fell in a tightly-contested match to Vlahos 6-3, 7-6 (4), while Lesiuk fell in a tiebreak to Delvaux 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
Another decisive match happened at three-singles, as Anthony Breitenbach (Sr., Tigard, Ore.) lost hold of his match after claiming the first set over Nick Baker 6-1 before falling 6-2 and 6-3 to tumble to a loss.
The Pack, though, did have a big win at three-doubles, which carried over to the singles matches.
Alexandro Moncayo-Samperio (Jr., Veracruz, Mexico) and Shane Nicholls (Fr., Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) came away with a hard-fought 9-7 win at doubles before moving on to singles and eking out more wins. Nicholls earned a 7-5, 6-3 win at six-singles while Moncayo-Samperio persevered in a tiebreak win at four-singles, winning 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3.
CSU-Pueblo will remain in Pueblo as the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves Tennis Classic continues Saturday and Sunday, drawing highly-touted NAIA power Bethany (Kan.) Saturday.
