PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - March 12, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo was able to take the first step toward exorcising the demons of recent lapses in all three phases of the game, excelling Tuesday in a 3-2 non-conference win over Colorado Mines.
CSU-Pueblo, which just dropped four straight at home to New Mexico Highlands after pitching, hitting and fielding all took a step backward, saw its game improve Tuesday in a big way. Pitching by committee, the arms were solid, headlined by a hitless three innings from starter Jeremiah Struble (Sr., Divide, Colo.), a perfect two innings from eventual winner and true freshman Kevin Megyeri (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and the first save of the season from reliever Dillon Given (Jr., Salinas, Calif.).
It was the Pack's performance in the field, however, that opened the most eyes. After committing 12 errors in four games vs. New Mexico Highlands, CSU-Pueblo was perfect in the field, allowing the arms to settle down as Pack pitching allowed just two runs on five hits, both Oredigger runs coming on RBIs on groundball outs.
With the sticks, the Pack fired off nine hits, none bigger than the knocks by Evan Kenebrew (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.). After the Pack spent the first five innings getting shut out, Kenebrew landed the only extra base hit by either team with his sixth inning double that put the ThunderWolves in business with runners at second and third with nobody out. Before the inning was over, the Pack would plate two runs to tie the game at 2-2.
In the bottom of the 7th, Kenebrew again emerged as the hero, putting the Pack up for good with a two-out RBI single that scored Mike Knueppel (Sr., Spencer, Iowa), giving the ThunderWolves its final 3-2 lead.
With the victory, CSU-Pueblo improves to 8-9, but the Tuesday win was a non-conference victory and does not impact the RMAC standings. CSU-Pueblo will travel to Adams State this weekend to take on the new RMAC member in Alamosa.
