PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com- March 10, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo fell to a sweep at the hands of New Mexico Highlands Sunday after losing 15-9 in 10 innings and 14-3 in the final game of a four-game series.
CSU-Pueblo gave up a seven runs in the first inning of the day's first game of the day, and by the third inning, were down 9-0.
But CSU-Pueblo certainly rallied up the troops, though, responded with an offensive explosion of 20 hits, a season high, as it chipped away at the Cowboy lead. In the bottom of the 9th and trailing 9-7, the Pack put up two runs on a two-run single by Scott Hoyt (Jr., Longmont, Colo.) to tie the game at 9-9 after dinging the Cowboys' nearly automatic closer, Oscar Almeida.
But the Cowboys took the air out of that balloon by storming back with a six run 10th, and the exasperated ThunderWolves were struck out in order by Almeida in the bottom half of the 10th to go down to the 15-9 defeat.
The hangover continued for the Pack in the second game as the Cowboys turned a 3-1 game into a rout with a nine-run third inning, going up 12-1 and putting the game out of reach.
CSU-Pueblo, which entered the weekend tied for first place in the RMAC with a 4-0 conference record, falls all the way to 4-4 in conference play and 7-9 overall after the weekend sweep. The ThunderWolves will travel to Colorado School of Mines Tuesday in a non-conference battle before going on the road for a road series against the newly-resurrected Adams State baseball team in Alamosa next weekend.
