ALAMOSA, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Feb. 16, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo got back in the win column Saturday after securing a much-needed 76-55 win at Adams State.
The ThunderWolves rebounded from a slow start to take the game over, using its defense to shut down the Grizzlies. After going down 10-7 five minutes into the game as the Pack struggled getting shots to fall, especially from three-point range, CSU-Pueblo finally began hitting.
The Pack connected on its next five short-range shots, eventually abandoning the three-ball and instead focused on its height advantage to control the boards and offensive chances down low. Senior post Laurel Kearsley (Sr., Victor, Idaho) was the focal point of this approach, scoring a game-high 22 points and taking down nine rebounds while also adding a steal and a blocked shot. Fellow post mate Katie Nehf (So., Broomfield, Colo.) went for a respectable nine points and six rebounds while Erica Hicks (Sr., Lakewood, Colo.) kept them honest from the outside, hitting three three-pointers to score 20 points.
With its defensive game holding court, CSU-Pueblo took over and never looked back. It seized the lead at the 12:04 mark of the first half and never lost it again, carrying a 42-32 lead into the half after an offensively explosive first 20 minutes.
Both teams tempered considerably in the second half, but it was the Pack who got off to the fast start, beginning things with a 13-2 run to go up 55-34. The Pack called off the dogs as time slid off the clock, keeping Adams State from ever cutting to the deficit to less than double-digits.
CSU-Pueblo improves to 16-6 overall and 13-5 in conference play, but did not improve its fortunes in the RMAC standings as it is still tied for fourth place.
CSU-Pueblo will return home for its final home weekend of the season when it hosts Chadron State and Black Hills State.
