Pack off to longest home win streak since 2004.
PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - April 7, 2012) - CSU-Pueblo stayed in first place and turned in its third straight home sweep Sunday, defeating Colorado Christian 12-2 for its 13th straight home win.
The ThunderWolves simply controlled the game from the get-go and watched as Colorado Christian even helped the Pack's cause by sinking itself on multiple occasions. Despite actually out-hitting the ThunderWolves 12-10, the Cougars stranded 13 runners on base.
Pitcher Sean Gavin (Jr., Canyon Country, Calif.) was solid, improving to 4-0 and winning his third straight decision. He allowed just one run on seven hits in five innings of work, striking out five. Over his last three starts, Gavin has given up just five runs in 19-1/3 innings, striking out 16.
J.T. Greenhood (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) kept his now-22-game hit streak alive in dramatic fashion, nailing a 7th inning grand slam to blow the game wide open for the Pack. Jovany Valenzuela (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) went 3-for-4 on the day with his second triple of the weekend and Chris Schindler (Sr., San Mateo, Calif.) turned in a two-hit effort.
CSU-Pueblo improves to 22-12 overall and 19-5 in conference play, still tied Colorado Mesa atop the RMAC standings, both three games up on New Mexico Highlands. But the ThunderWolves are now riding a 13-game home win streak, its longest since uncorking 12 straight in 2004. The school record is 17 straight in 2003.
CSU-Pueblo will now go on the road for a four-game series at Regis, beginning Friday afternoon in Denver, before returning to Pueblo for a series with Colorado Mines, kicking off with "Pack the Park" at Pueblo's Runyon Field Apr. 20.
