Pack still on way to series win but loses ground on Colorado Mesa.

PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - April 21, 2012) - All that stood between CSU-Pueblo and a doubleheader sweep was a giant inning by Mines in the early game as the Pack rebounded from a 12-8 setback to score a 6-2 win in the late game Saturday.

After Mines hung eight on the ThunderWolves in the fifth inning of the opening game of the doubleheader, upending a 5-3 CSU-Pueblo lead, the Pack offense did its best to play its way back in the game.  The ThunderWolves were able to net three runs in the bottom of the 7th in an ill-fated comeback attempt, but it was enough to provide the Pack momentum going into the second game.

Behind a standout performance from true freshman Ryan Masterson (Fr., Albany, Calif.), who got his first collegiate start and turned in a lights out performance, CSU-Pueblo was able to roar to a 6-2 win largely uncontested.

Masterson allowed just two hits - both of which scored - in a complete-game, three-strikeout masterpiece that is among the top debuts by a freshman starting pitcher in recent program history.  

Offensively, the Pack rode a home run by J.T. Greenhood (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) to grind out the win.

With the split, however, CSU-Pueblo lost ground on conference-leading Colorado Mesa, which swept a doubleheader from Colorado Christian Saturday.  CSU-Pueblo is currently tied for second place in the conference with New Mexico Highlands.

The ThunderWolves will wrap up its series with Mines Sunday in a noon 9-inning game at Rawlings Field.
