CSU-Pueblo one win away from clean sweep, possible bid for first place in RMAC.
PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - March 24, 2012) - Behind lights-out pitching and red-hot hitting, CSU-Pueblo continued firing on all cylinders and sending 18th-ranked New Mexico Highlands in a tailspin, taking two from the Cowboys Saturday in decisive fashion, winning 10-3 and 7-0.
The victory suddenly ties the ThunderWolves with Highlands in the RMAC standings at 11-4. Entering the weekend, the Cowboys had just one RMAC loss and an 11-1 conference record. Pending the outcome of Saturday's late Colorado Mesa game, the ThunderWolves could be in a three-way tie for first place by the end of action Saturday.
Starting pitching defined the day for the Pack as the double dip opened with an impressive outing be reining RMAC Pitcher of the Week, Jeremiah Struble (Jr., Divide, Colo.). Struble tossed another complete game, striking out six and allowing just one earned run and one walk as the Pack roared to the 10-3 win.
As impressive as Struble was in shutting down the RMAC's top offense, the starter in the back end of the doubleheader, Kyle Clemens (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.), was even more so.
Clemens, too, tossed a complete game, allowing just four hits while shutting out the Cowboys in a 7-0 win. Despite claiming just one strikeout, Clemens hit his spots and lured the Cowboys into eight groundball outs and two double plays.
Offensively, the Pack's go-to stick continued to be senior catcher Chris Schindler (Sr., San Mateo, Calif.). He went long-ball for the second straight game during the 10-3 win, headlining a 2-for-3, 2-RBI effort. In the late game, Schindler again turned in a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
J.T. Greenhood (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) remained on a tear, running his hit streak to 13 after gathering hits in both games.
CSU-Pueblo will try for the sweep, its eighth straight win and ninth straight RMAC win Sunday as its series with New Mexico Highlands closes. First pitch Sunday is scheduled for 12 p.m.
