CSU-Pueblo hands Cowboys just second RMAC loss of the season.
PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - March 23, 2012) - Behind timely hits and a complete game from Friday night pitcher Mike Fabrizio (So., Pueblo, Colo.), CSU-Pueblo scored an 8-4 win over RMAC-leading and 18th-ranked New Mexico Highlands.
The ThunderWolves' ace outdid Highlands' top pitcher, Greg Fowler, going a full nine innings, striking out six batters and giving up four runs on 11 hits.
He benefitted from a great night by the Pack lineup as far as getting hits in key situations, going a combined 5-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Chris Schindler (Sr., San Mateo, Calif.) was the star offensively for the Pack, recording a monstrous three-run blast in the third inning that lifted CSU-Pueblo to a then-5-1 lead. He also was on the receiving end of the night's biggest defensive play, preventing a New Mexico Highlands run in the 5th inning on a play at the plate from J.T. Greenhood (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.), surviving a collision at the plate to record the final out of the inning on the outfield assist.
The ThunderWolves secured victory with a three-run 7th inning, breaking open a tenuous 5-4 lead on a two-run single by Andrew Castaneda (Sr., San Jose, Calif.) with the bases loaded, part of his 3-for-4 day. Curtis Cowell (Jr., Monrovia, Calif.) also knocked in an insurance run to ice the Pack win.
CSU-Pueblo, officially above the .500 mark after the win with a 12-11 overall record and 9-4 mark in RMAC play, will play two with the Cowboys Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
