ThunderWolves sweep Metro State for first time since 2007.
PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - March 18, 2012) - CSU-Pueblo claimed its first sweep of Metro State since 2007 with a 17-4 drubbing of the Roadrunners at Rawlings Field Sunday.
The ThunderWolves only trailed for one half-inning as it ripped Metro State for 18 hits, seven of which went for extra bases.
CSU-Pueblo took its first lead in the bottom of the second when, after trailing 1-0, it used back-to-back doubles from Curtis Cowell (Jr., Monrovia, Calif.) and Mike Knueppel (Jr., Mesa, Ariz.) to score three runs and jump out to a lead it would never relinquish.
The ThunderWolves' scoring machine kept on rolling throughout as six ThunderWolves turned in multi-hit games and 11 different players getting hits. Andrew Castaneda (Sr., San Jose, Calif.) led all batters by going 3-for-3, scoring three runs and driving in another three. Knueppel also scored three runs, going 2-for-3 and driving in two runs.
Amazingly CSU-Pueblo scored all 17 of its runs without the benefit of a single home run and only one triple.
On the mound, Kyle Clemens (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored his first win by giving up just two runs on four hits over five innings. The CSU-Pueblo relieving corps, one day after getting torched in a 13-12 win, combined to allow two runs on four hits over the final four innings.
With the sweep of Metro State, CSU-Pueblo improves to 11-11 and 8-4 in conference play. At day's end, CSU-Pueblo found itself in third place in the conference standings and one game behind Colorado Mesa for the lead in the RMAC Mountain Division. The Pack will remain at home next weekend when it entertains the leading team of the conference, New Mexico Highlands, which is 17-3 and 11-1 in conference play. The first game of the series is slated for 6 p.m. Friday.
