Pitching, key at bats carry Pack to doubleheader sweep

ThunderWolves right the ship with impressive wins in double-dip.

PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Feb. 18, 2012) - CSU-Pueblo broke its hex at the plate - and raised its confidence - with a 2-1 walk-off win in the first half of a doubleheader against Montana State-Billings Saturday before following it up with a 12-3 schlacking of the Yellowjackets.

The Pack rode two nearly lights out pitching performances by Mike Fabrizio (So., Pueblo, Colo.) in the first game and Brandon Evans (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) in the second game, as the Pack starters held Billings to just seven hits.

In Fabrizio's outing, which featured an eight-strikeout effort by the Pueblo native, his performance was crucial as he was embroiled in a hard-nosed pitching duel with Samuel Paterson.  The Pack trailed 1-0 in the middle of the sixth inning, being one-hit by Paterson, before the hits finally came.

Derek DiCarlo (Sr., Louisville, Colo.) started the sixth with a leadoff single, and following an error that put Cale Soole (So., Louisville, Colo.) aboard, Chase Lacomb (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) doubled home a run to tie it up at 1-1.

In the bottom of the 7th, a pinch-hit single by Mike Wagner (Fr., Golden, Colo.) started things off, which later led to a bases loaded chance for DiCarlo with nobody out.  The Pack used small ball to walk off with the win as DiCarlo put down a bunt to bring the winning run in.

The second game, however, was nowhere near as dramatic, as Evans shut down the Yellowjackets, holding them to just two hits over five innings, striking out four.  The Pack bats took care of the rest, led by an outstanding blast by Jovany Valenzuela (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) in the bottom of a five-run first.  DiCarlo was again hot, as well, going 3-for-4 in the second game.

CSU-Pueblo will look to take its third game of the series Sunday as it closes with the Yellowjackets in a nine inning game at noon.
