SILVER CITY, N.M. (GoThunderWolves.com - Dec. 14, 2012) - Despite starting the game trailing 21-3, CSU-Pueblo came back to hold off Western New Mexico Friday, claiming a 64-57 win.
CSU-Pueblo began the game as dismal as possible as only a Caiti Forrester (Jr., Boulder City, Nev.) three-pointer kept the ThunderWolves from going down by three touchdowns to the Mustangs. The Pack began the game a gruesome 1-for-17 from the field, shooting just six percent, while the Mustangs went 9-for-15, or 60 percent, to open the game.
Thankfully, CSU-Pueblo recovered, finally finding its stroke as it went on a 17-5 run that saved the game for them. The big key during this run was turnovers and rebounds as the Pack out-boarded the Mustangs 12-6 and committed just one turnover, allowing for more offensive chances for the final eight minutes of the half. At the break, CSU-Pueblo still trailed 26-20, but had the momentum.
In the second half, the Pack was able to fully wrest momentum - and the lead - away from Western New Mexico. The ThunderWolves began on a 7-0 run to take its first lead, 27-26, and though it lost it shortly thereafter, going down by as much as 36-32 five minutes into the second half, the Pack would quickly get back in the driver's seat.
The ThunderWolves would ride three straight three-pointers on an 11-0 run to take a 43-36 lead and never surrender the advantage again. In the end, despite its rough start, the Pack ended up shooting nearly 40 percent and out-rebounding the Mustangs 41-30 in the win.
Laurel Kearsley (Sr., Victor, Idaho) turned in her fourth double-double of the season, going for 13 points and 10 rebounds while the Pack bench shined, scoring 25 points, including eight points and three steals from Forrester, who scored most of her points at key moments throughout the game.
CSU-Pueblo, now 7-2, will try to run it 8-2 Saturday when it travels to New Mexico Highlands to take on the Cowgirls.
