Three-hitter by Juarez, 23 hits clinches doubleheader sweep of Cougars.
LAKEWOOD, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Apr. 9, 2011) - Headlined by a dominant pitching performance by Joey Juarez (Oxnard, Calif.), the ThunderWolves completed a four-game sweep of Colorado Christian Saturday, winning 8-1 and 12-6.
In seven innings of work, Juarez allowed just three hits while striking out two, holding down the bump while the Pack offense teed off.
Leading the charge was Beau Stevens (Sr., Westminster, Colo.), who hit his second home run in as many games when he went deep in the 5th inning, part of a three RBI game. In the late game Friday, Stevens drove in four for the ThunderWolves.
In the late game, the ThunderWolves survived a scare as the game was tied 4-4 after four innings, but the ThunderWolves exploded for eight runs to take over the game for good.
Jye Lanphere (Sr., Spokane, Wash.) came through with a two-run double, part of a three-run fifth inning, as the Pack jumped out to a 7-4 lead.
Then the ThunderWolves again hit paydirt, putting five on the board in the sixth as Lanphere again had an RBI, this time from a bases loaded single. Jason Veyna (Sr., Lamar, Colo.) followed it up with a two-run single as the Pack took a 12-4 lead, getting the lead it needed for the eventual 12-6 win.
CSU-Pueblo saw its record improve drastically in the series, jumping to 19-15 overall and 14-10 in RMAC play. But it gained no ground in the RMAC Mountain Division standings - Metro State is a game away from a sweep of New Mexico Highlands and continues to maintain a two game lead on the Pack, while division-leading Mesa State is a game away from an unlikely sweep of RMAC-leading Nebraska-Kearney.
CSU-Pueblo will return home next weekend for a four-game set with Regis as three of the season's final four series will take place at home.
