PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Mar. 9, 2011) - Backed by strong pitching and tenacious hitting, CSU-Pueblo turned in a 13-4 rout of Regis in a non-conference home game Wednesday.
The ThunderWolves overcame an early 3-1 deficit and relied on a nine-run explosion during the third and fourth innings to build an insurmountable lead.
In the six-run fourth inning, the Pack got six hits, including five consecutive hits at one point and three doubles in unleashing a hit parade on Regis. The big inning came on the heels of a pitching change by Regis, who took out starter Kyle Mack after three largely effective innings in favor of Andrew Scheid, a planned split pitching bill for the Rangers that didn't go as planned. All six runs in the fourth inning by Scheid were unearned.
The Pack pitchers, meanwhile, were largely lights out as the ThunderWolves coaches tried to get some work in before the Pack's weekend series with Mesa State. Six hurlers headed to the mound and gave up a grand total of just six hits over nine innings. The most effective was Zack Richmond (Sr., Chino Hills, Calif.), who took over in a game where the Pack was trailing 3-1 and led it out of the depths, pitching three innings of one-hit ball, striking out two and not giving up a run. For his efforts, Richmond earned his first win of the season.
CSU-Pueblo, now at 7-4 and riding a five-game winning streak, head to Mesa State for a huge early season RMAC showdown, beginning Friday afternoon.
