Pack claims first win over Billings since 2007 during weekend's play.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Mar. 6, 2011) - CSU-Pueblo's women's tennis squad battled to the limit this weekend, coming away with a big win over conference foe, Montana State-Billings, and coming a couple matches away in losses to Colorado Christian and Colorado College.

The ThunderWolves eked out a 5-4 win over Montana State-Billings, its first win over the Yellow Jackets since 2007, but lost a pair of duals with Colorado Christian and Colorado College by 7-2 scores.

"I was ecstatic about our win over Billings," Pack coach Brad Gerler said.  "It was a complete team effort as we got wins from 6 different players."

A big reason for Billings win was the strong play at the top of the order, particularly by Morgan Forsyth (Jr., Parker, Colo.). 

Forsyth rebounded from losses on Saturday to the RMAC's preseason player of the year, Colorado Christian's Amy Andersen, both in the one-singles match and the one-doubles match with partner Andrea Ortiz (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.), and went a combined 4-0 Saturday against Billings and Colorado College.

She came close to beating Andersen in her singles match, falling 7-6 (5), 6-4, but annihilated Billings' Kim Karlsson 6-1, 6-2.  She also came back from a setback against Colorado College's Deanna Thirkell, winning 2-6, 7-5, 10-5.

At one-doubles, Forsyth and Ortiz won a pair of 8-3 matches Sunday.

"Morgan was very sick this weekend and really fought hard to pull out some wins in matches that she easily could have thrown in the towel in," Gerler said.

On Saturday, CSU-Pueblo will play in its first home tennis match when it hosts Metro State at Pueblo City Park.
