Solid pitching powers first game win over Mesa State.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Mar. 12, 2011) - The Pack erased memories of a 15-2 loss Friday against archrival Mesa State, riding stellar pitching to a 4-1 win in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday before falling 7-3 in the nightcap.
Matt Cole (Sr., Walnut, Calif.) and Tim Pomierski (Jr., Upland, Calif.) combined to two-hit the Mavericks, which entered the game on a seven-game win streak. Cole allowed one run over four innings of work, improving to 2-0. Pomierski was able to record his second save of the season, this one of the three-inning variety.
Offensively, the big hit of the day came from Kyle Wager (Sr., Globe, Ariz.), who halted a slump by hitting a solo home run during the win. He also scored two runs in the game.
The second game wasn't as pretty for the ThunderWolves, as Mesa State went up by a touchdown, 7-0, after three innings. The Pack relievers were able to stop the bleeding after that explosion, allowing just one hit for the remainder of the game while the offense was able to muster three runs, two coming in the fourth inning that saw the Pack plate two runs and get runners on second and third before getting a single out. But a pitching change and two ThunderWolf outs stopped the inning and the Pack never again threatened for a big inning.
CSU-Pueblo will get a chance to split the series with their division rivals tomorrow with a nine-inning contest beginning at noon.
