Pack pitching collapses in doubleheader sweep

11 pitchers see mound time during rough day.

PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Feb. 13, 2011) - CSU-Pueblo suffered a sweep at the hands of upstart Montana State-Billings Sunday, losing 21-15 and 6-5 to the Yellow Jackets.

CSU-Pueblo was able to hold the Yellow Jackets scoreless in five of nine innings, but gave up four, six, eight and three runs, respectively, over four big innings as the Pack was never able to establish a lead in the game.  The writing was on the wall after the game's beginning, which saw Billings' first three runners reach base, then all score following a grand slam with none out.

In second game, both teams went back and forth, with CSU-Pueblo only taking a short-live 3-2 lead in the third inning before a four-run fourth inning by MSUB effectively sunk the Pack.

Of the few bright spots for the ThunderWolves was a ninth-inning pinch hit home run by Vinnie Mattivi (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.), who became just the second ThunderWolf since the program was restarted in 1994 to hit a home run in his first at bat with the program.  His solo shot came as CSU-Pueblo made a vanity rally at the end of game one.

Also having a huge day was two-hole hitter Andrew Castaneda (Jr., San Jose, Calif.), who went a combined 7-for-9 in the doubleheader, scoring five runs with 5 RBI and stealing one base.  He also had an inside-the-park home run in the second game.  He is hitting .692 to start the season thus far.

CSU-Pueblo will take the next weekend off before hosting the first end of a home-and-home four-game series with Metro State Feb. 25-26.
