Wager powers Pack to season-opening sweep

Pack rallies twice to emerge victorious.

PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Feb. 12, 2011) - CSU-Pueblo opened up its 2011 season with a bang Saturday, using strong pitching a pair of home runs by Kyle Wager (Sr., Globe, Ariz.) to sweep a doubleheader from Montana State-Billings.

The two teams will close out its four-game set tomorrow with another doubleheader at 11 a.m.

CSU-Pueblo, which was able to claim its ninth straight opening day win, fell behind 4-2 in the 5th inning as number-one starter, Cole Stephens (Sr., Amarillo, Tex.) got into a bit of trouble, giving up a home run, but CSU-Pueblo tied the game at 4 on an RBI double by Jason Veyna (Sr., Lamar, Colo.) and a sacrifice fly by Andrew Castaneda (Jr., San Jose, Calif.).

Behind outstanding relief pitching by Tim Pomierski (Jr., Upland, Calif.), who struck out three of the first four batters he faced after entering the game in the 6th, pitching four innings of shutout ball, giving up three hits and earning the win, CSU-Pueblo had a chance to give the game over to its offense.

The offense came in the form Wager's bomb, whose solo shot to lead off the 6th carried the Pack to a 6-4 win.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Yellow Jackets went up 5-3 in the 5th inning, but again, CSU-Pueblo answered immediately with some help from Wager.

After drawing walks to open the inning, CSU-Pueblo went up for good when Wager blasted a homer over the leftfield fence to give the Pack a 6-5 lead.

Behind its strong relief pitching, as well as the first save of the season by Joey Juarez (Jr., Oxnard, Calif.), the Pack held on for the win and improved to 2-0.

With another doubleheader on tap, CSU-Pueblo will try to earn its first 4-0 start to a season since 2004 - as well as earn the 600th career win for head coach Stan Sanchez - with another doubleheader sweep Sunday.
