Pack claims first RMAC weekend sweep of the young season.
GOLDEN, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Dec. 10, 2011) - Led by a strong defense effort all-around, CSU-Pueblo held Colorado School of Mines to 28 percent shooting en route to a 73-59 road win Saturday.
The ThunderWolves were in control all game long, only allowing the Orediggers to mount a few short-lived leads early in the first half. Midway through the first half, with the Pack holding a tenuous 19-18 lead, the ThunderWolves went on an 8-0 run to go up 27-18. Mines, though, indicated it wouldn't go down easily, going on a 9-3 run to end the half and closing CSU-Pueblo's advantage to 30-27 at the break.
CSU-Pueblo did remain consistently a score or two ahead of the Orediggers for the first five minutes of the second half before finally breaking out. Led by four points by Alex Evans (So., Louisville, Colo.) and three points by Jennelle Branting (Sr., Littleton, Colo.), the Pack went on a 9-0 run that effectively buried Mines, putting CSU-Pueblo ahead 48-37. From there, Mines would get no closer than seven points as the ThunderWolves cruised the rest of the way.
The Pack benefitted from four 10-plus point performances, with a pair of 14-point outputs by Branting and Kendall Babler (Sr., Rifle, Colo.). Evans added 13 while Laurel Kearsley (Jr., Victor, Idaho) was a board away from a double-double, going for 10 points and nine rebounds.
CSU-Pueblo will return home next weekend, hosting Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands at Massari Arena.
