Game 1: CSU-Pueblo 3, Colorado Christian 2
Game 2: CSU-Pueblo 7, Colorado Christian 0
PUEBLO - Friday, the ThunderWolves put the RMAC on notice.
CSU-Pueblo found its one-two pitching punch against Colorado
Christian, getting a pair of dominant - and quick
- complete-game wins from Cole Stephens (Jr.,
Amarillo, Tex.) and Josh Herback-South (Sr.,
Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada) as the Pack recorded 3-2 and
7-0 wins over the Cougars.
CSU-Pueblo disposed of Christian in one of the quickest
doubleheaders in program history, earning the 3-2 win in a
nine-inning game in two hours even, while Herback-South's two-hit
gem in the nightcap lasted just one hour and 27 minutes.
Stephens was stellar for the Pack, earning his third
straight win as a starter as the ThunderWolves mounted a 3-2 win in
the opener. Stephens allowed seven Cougar hits,
throwing six innings of shutout ball before allowing Christian's
only two runs in the 7th inning.
But Stephens' great win was upstaged by one of the top pitching
performances of the season as Herback-South allowed just two
hits, striking out six as the Pack mounted a complete 7-0 win.
Herback-South, statistically the Pack's top starter this season
despite only making his sixth start of the season Friday, turned in
the ThunderWolves' second shutout of the season. Sporting a
southpaw arm that Pack coach Stan Sanchez had treated gingerly
this season, Herback-South adjusted his delivery from overhand to a
three-quarter motion, gaining some velocity and immediately
establishing himself in the two-spot in the Pack's rotation.
"Herback had great velocity out there today and he was hitting
the high 80's when he threw his 100th pitch tonight," Sanchez
said. "Between he and Cole Stephens, we have a shot to bring
the conference's top two pitchers into the RMAC tournament."
CSU-Pueblo will see if their three and four starters measure up
Saturday as the Pack finish out their four-game set with the
Cougars Saturday at 1 p.m. with another doubleheader.
