Friday, CSU-Pueblo's defense kept them in a game they had no
business being in.
And at the end, defense is what won it for the ThunderWolves.
A big block by Mary Rehfeld (Sr.,
Juneau, Alaska) capped a night of big defensive plays,
helping the Pack to seal a slim win over archrival Adams State by a
47-46 advantage.
Despite shooting just 30.2 percent from the field Friday,
CSU-Pueblo boasted a strong transition defense, registering 10
steals and forcing 19 Adams State turnovers.
The ThunderWolves' fortunes seemed incredibly sour in the first
half, when the Pack went into halftime trailing 27-19, shooting
just 25 percent from the field. But the ThunderWolves slowly
worked its way back into it, starting out 20-12 in the second half
to tie the game and work a razor thin advantage throughout the
remainder of the game.
Shandryn Trumble
(Sr., Green River, Wyo.), starting in place of Michelle
Ambuul (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) who played
sparingly Friday due to an injury, was the most consistent
ThunderWolf, hitting 6-for-7 from the field for 13 points.
The Pack was led by Rachel Espinoza
(So., Pueblo, Colo.), who had 14 points on an 8-for-9
effort from the charity stripe.
The ThunderWolves will have little time to enjoy its slim win,
taking on conference lynchpin and the fifth-ranked team in the
country, Fort Lewis, on Saturday.
