CSU-Pueblo 62, Mesa State
50
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The ThunderWolves survived a late surge
by Mesa State Thursday night in Grand Junction, regrouping to come
away with a 62-50 win over the Mavericks.
CSU-Pueblo held a 13-point halftime lead, 35-22, and led by as
much as 14 midway through the second half, before Mesa State
started burying shots, forcing stops and making things interesting.
The Mavericks embarked on a 17-0 run, holding CSU-Pueblo without
a field goal for over eight minutes, turning a 41-27 disadvantage
into a 44-41 lead.
The ThunderWolves shrugged off Mesa State's advance, however,
answering right back with a 13-2 run that gave the Pack an
eight-point advantage with just three minutes remaining, all but
sealing the win. The run was keyed by Mary Rehfeld (Sr.,
Juneau, Alaska), who scored eight points during the
advance, going 3-for-4 from the field, burying one
three-pointer. Rehfeld finished with 15 points and nine
rebounds.
The ThunderWolves were also led by Jonnie Draper (Sr.,
Littleton, Colo.), who turned in her best all-around
performance of the season, recording 14 points and tying a career
high with five steals. Michelle Ambuul
(Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) led all scorers with 17
points.
The Pack earned its victory by doing two things it has seemed to
do all season when earning the win - leading at halftime and
winning the rebound battle. CSU-Pueblo is now 10-0 this
season when it leads at halftime, and is 8-0 win out-rebounding
their opponent.
The ThunderWolves improve to 11-5 overall and 5-3 in RMAC play
with the win. The Pack will look to sweep the weekend when
they take on Western State in Gunnison Friday night.
