Track and Field Conclude Spank Blasing Invitational Winning Three Events

Pack led by distance runners on Saturday

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo Men's and Women's Track and Field squads concluded the Spank Blasing Invitational on Saturday at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl.

The Pack were led by the women's squad on Saturday, as CSU Pueblo was able to win three events on the women's side, paced by the distance runners.

Senior Margot Thomas-Gatel (France, Notre Dame Les Oiseaux) easily won the women's 5000 meters as she ran an impressive time of 17:33.21. Sophomore Sarah Renberg (Fresno, Calif./Edison) had a strong performance in the same race, finishing sixth with a time of 18:13.86.

Sophomore Delaney Gilfillan (Denver, Colo./George Washington) easily won the women's 3000 meters with a time of 11:24.16, finishing more than a minute ahead of second place.

Sophomore Jadyn Herron-Jonap (Queen Creek, Ariz./Casteel) finished second place in the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:11.98, and picked up an NCAA DII Provisional with that time. Herron-Jonap was the highest racer in the event affiliated with a school.

The shot-put duo of junior Katherine Higgins (Mead, Colo./Ponderosa) and sophomore Febe Wessels (Pretoria, South Africa) went one and two in the event. Higgins won the event easily with a mark of 15.11 meters and an NCAA DII Provisional Throw. Wessels finished second with a mark of 14.32 meters and an NCAA DII Provisional Throw.

On the men's side, graduate student thrower Justin Jenks (Helena, Mont./Helena Capital) continued his historic season, as the All-American finished second in the men's shot-put with a mark of 17.62 meters, good enough for an NCAA DII Provisional Throw. Jenks only finished behind a division one thrower in the event.

Junior Tyrell Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mesa Ridge), fresh off winning RMAC Track Athlete of the Week, had a strong performance in the 100-meter dash, as the sprinter finished fourth in the event with a time of 10.45 and an NCAA DII Provisional. Smith also picked up an NCAA DII Provisional in the 200-meter dash, as he finished fifth with a time of 21.04.

Senior Kaleb Tipton (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) picked up another NCAA DII Provisional for the Pack, as the mid-distance runner finished third in the 800-meters, with a time of 1:50.62.

The Pack had a strong showing in the men's 3000 steeplechase, as both graduate student Matisse Virey (Lyon, France/Lycee Charlie Chaplin) and junior Kaleb Beloy (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) both picked up NCAA DII Provisionals. Virey ran a time of 9:13.82 to finish third, while Beloy ran a time of 9:14.61 to finish fourth.
