Late-inning woes lead to two Pack losses

PUEBLO, Colo. (February 24, 2019) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball could not close out Angelo State University Sunday as the Rams  used final inning heroics to beat the Pack in game one 8-5 and game two 9-6 Sunday at Rawlings Field.
 
The Rams outscored the Pack 8-1 in the final inning.  A three-run home run in the seventh and final inning of the first game gave the Rams n 8-5 win. The Pack led game two 5-4 entering the ninth inning, but the Rams rallied with five runs that propelled them a 9-6 win.
 
Dakota Popham (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished the day 4-for-7 with a walk. Popham blasted his second home run of the season. He scored two runs and drove in two more on his dinger.
 
JP Hopkins (R-Jr., Chino Hills, Calif.) went 3-for-7 with three runs scored. Hopkins hit. .643 for the series (9-for-14). He scored six runs and had three doubles.
 
Gilbert Sauceda (Sr., Indio, Calif.) also had three hits in seven trips. The Pack's leadoff hitter drew two walks. Sauceda tripled, scored once and drove in a run.
 
After Angelo State scored one in the top of the first, the Pack answered with one of their own when Gilbert Sauceda (Sr., Indio, Calif.) came home on a Reggie Williams single. Williams (Fr., Castle Rock, Colo.) went 2-for-4 in game one.
 
The Rams took the lead with two runs in the second and two more in the third. Timmy Burtzloff (Sr., Thousand Oaks, Calif.) got the final out in the third and shut out the Rams for the next three innings.
 
CSU-Pueblo answered with four runs in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Aidan Welch (So., Seattle, Wash.) slugged a three-run double. Welch scored the tying run on an error.
 
In the top of the seventh, Angelo State got a three-run home run off of Andrew Coverly (Jr., Centennial, Colo.) that would be the difference in the game. Coverly took his first loss of his Pack career.
 
Angelo State scored twice in the first inning of game two. The Pack cranked a two-run home run to tie the game.
 
Chris Douglas (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) kept stranding Rams. Douglas lasted 4.1 innings, giving up three runs. He stranded 10 runners. The Pack stranded 13 runners in the second half of the doubleheader.
 
The Rams reclaimed the lead with runs in the fifth and sixth. CSU-Pueblo tied the game with two runs in the sixth. Hopkins hammered a double in the seventh that drove in Easton Adler (Jr., Mead, Colo.) and gave the Pack a 5-4 lead. Adler scored two runs in game two.
 
In the ninth, the Rams scored five runs that gave them a 9-6 win. The Rams completed their sweep of the Pack to improve to 11-4. The Pack fell to 3-7.
 
CSU-Pueblo will wrap up non-conference play with a three-game home series against Minot State University. The ThunderWolves and Beavers will open their-three game set Saturday at 3 p.m. at Rawlings Field.
