Pack survives struggle with Adams State

PUEBLO, Colo. (December 7, 2018) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Women's Basketball edged Adams State University 65-64 Friday at Massari Arena.
 
Khiya Adams (Jr., Falcon, Colo.) scored a career-high 23 points. Adams completed her third double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. She made 9-of-15 from the field. Adams had two steals and a block
 
JaNaiya Davis (Fr., Hewitt, Texas) netted 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and a 5-of-7 showing at the line. Davis filled the stats sheet with seven rebounds, three steals,  and career highs in blocks (two) and assists (six).
 
Jennah Knafelc (Sr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored 12 points. With 3.1 seconds left in the game Knafelc blocked a potential game-tying shot, forcing the Grizzlies to settle for two that left them just short. She also made the Pack's only two 3-pointers.
 
Kansas Watts (Fr., Houston, Texas) had six points and six rebounds. Watts also delivered a career –high three steals. Five of Watts' six boards came on the offensive glass.
 
The Pack raced out to a 9-0 lead just over two minutes into the game. Adams State went on a 13-6 run that cut the Pack's lead two. The two rivals remained close throughout the first quarter. As time expired in the first quarter, Davis got her own rebound and put in a buzzer beater jump shot to make it 23-20 after one.
 
With just over a minute left in the first half, the Pack had built their lead back to eight. The Grizzlies closed the half with the final four points to close the gap to four at 40-36 at the break.
 
The third quarter belonged to the Grizzlies. After the Pack got the first bucket of the second half, the Grizzlies used a 9-0 to take their first lead of the game at 45-42. They kept that three-point at the end of the third, holding a 50-47 lead after one.
 
In the fourth quarter, the game started to see saw. The ThunderWolves took a 57—54 lead on a Watts jumper. Adams State cut it to two with a bucket of their own. On the ensuing possession, the Pack scored six points. Knafelc made a three. During the shot, Adams was fouled. She mad a free throw, but missed the second half. Watts got the offensive rebound and the put back that made it 63-56 with just over three minutes to go.
 
The Grizzlies clawed back within two until an Adams free throw made it 65-62 with three seconds to go. Adams had a shot at the game-tying 3-pointer. Knafelc flew in and blocked the shot. The Grizzlies recovered and fired a desperation attempt at the net, however, Marshell Hollins foot was on the line, making the buzzer beater a 2-pointer instead as the Pack escaped with a 65-64 win.
CSU-Pueblo improved to 4-4 on the year. They are 2-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Adams State fell to 1-3 (1-1 RMAC).
 
The Pack will continue its two-game homestand Saturday when they host Fort Lewis College at 5:30 p.m. in Massari Arena. Saturday's game will be YMCA Night. All YMCA members will receive $2 off admission. All kids who show up to the game wearing a YMCA youth jersey will receive free admission.
