PUEBLO, Colo. (November 16, 2018) – In their home debut, the young Colorado State University-Pueblo Women's Basketball squad could not vault past the University of Montana Western in a 80-78 final at Massari Arena Friday.
JaNaiya Davis (Fr., Hewitt, Texas) led the Pack with 16 points. Davis made 6-of-11 from the field and sank all four of her free throw attempts. The freshman also had five rebounds, four assists, a block and a career-best two steals.
Sydni Williams (So., Little Rock, Ark.) finished with 15 points. Williams went 7-of-9 at the line and 4-of-5 from the field. She added five rebounds.
Khiya Adams (Jr., Falcon, Colo.) narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. The 10 rebounds set a new career-high for Adams.
Making her Pack debut, Kansas Watts (Fr., Houston, Texas) scored 11 points. Watts made 4-of-8 from the field and drained all three of her free throws. She pulled down four rebounds. Fellow freshman Aubrey Robinson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) collected eight points on 3-of-4 shooting.
The Pack trailed by double-digits for much of the first half. The Bulldogs led 25-11 after the first quarter, achieving their largest lead of the game. Down 11 with less than two minutes left in the first half, the Pack surged into halftime with an 11-3 run that made it 42-39 at the break.
With just over a minute left in the third quarter, the Pack reclaimed the lead with a Watts free throw that made it 60-59. They led 62-61 heading into the final frame.
The two teams continued to battle in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs scored four consecutive points to jump in front 79-76. With 12 seconds left, Davis brought the Pack back within one at 79-78.
Forced to foul, the Pack watched the Bulldogs push the lead back to two with a free throw make. The ThunderWolves could not connect on their game-winning and game-tying tries in the final seconds as the Bulldogs pulled off the 80-78 win.
The loss sends the Pack to 1-2 during the young season. The Bulldogs are a perfect 4-0. These two teams will play in a rematch Saturday at 5 p.m. at Massari Arena
