KANSAS CITY, Mo. (February 27, 2016) – In the inaugural Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest, the Colorado State University-Pueblo men's lacrosse team fell to Rockhurst University Saturday by the score of 18-12.
Nick Matzek (R-Fr., Tustin, Calif.) and Blake Foerster (So., Centennial, Colo.) each racked up three goals for the hat trick, while Matzek added an assist for a team-high four points.
The ThunderWolves (0-2) got on the board first just 1:50 into the contest on a goal by Foerster. The Pack used the early momentum to go ahead 4-2 halfway through the first, but Rockhurst responded by winning the back end of the period 3-1 and the game was tied 5-5 after the first quarter.
The start of the second was all Rockhurst, as they scored three goals to open an 8-5 advantage. The ThunderWolves trailed 10-6 with three minutes left, but goals by junior Kelton Himmelberg (Centennial, Colo.) with 2:44 left and Matzek with 16 ticks remaining moved the road team within one at the half.
The Hawks stormed out of halftime and scored the period's first four goals to lead 14-8. CSU-Pueblo scored late in the third and early in the fourth to get within four at 14-10, but the deficit would prove to be too much to come back from in the six-goal loss.
Next, the Pack host the Hawks March 16 at 7 p.m. at the Art and Lorraine Gonzales Lacrosse Stadium. The game is a doubleheader with the women's lacrosse team beginning at 4 p.m. A special grand opening event is set to take place at 3 p.m. in front of the new stadium fieldhouse.
