ALAMOSA, Colo. (September 27, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's soccer team cruised to a 5-0 win Sunday at Adams State University in nonconference action.
Matt Marchena (Sr., F, Littleton, Colo.) led the Pack for a second straight game scoring two goals on only three shots. He now has six goals this season most on the team.
Three Pack players scored their first goals of the season in the shutout.
CSU-Pueblo's offensive attack was visible from the onset, making four shots at goal in the first twenty minutes.
In the 36th minute, the Pack controlled possession in Grizzlies territory when Zach Davis (R-So., D, Tucson, Ariz.) gaining control of the ball that was in the air, heading it down to the ground to a waiting Marchena who then fired a one timer beyond the reach of the goalkeeper to take the lead 1-nil.
"Matt played the ball into the box and got a nice touch on it to an outstretched goalkeeper," said Pack head coach Roy Stanley, "It was an opportunistic first half goal."
The ThunderWolves kept play at a high intensity level following the first score and eight minutes later in the 44th minute, the Pack earned a corner kick setting up Santiago Tinta (Fr., Mid., Quito-Ecuador) to a waiting Dycus Kelly (Fr., D, Laramie, Wyo.) who was behind the bunch, kicking it in for the second goal of the game. It is the first goal of the season for Kelly.
At halftime CSU-Pueblo held a 7-2 shots advantage and trailed 5-2 in corner kicks.
Opening the second period, the Pack scored twice in a seven minute span adding to the lead.
Marchena chipped in his second goal and third total for the Pack, after receiving a pass from Sam Glawe (Sr., D, Allen, Tex.) who drove the ball up field following a Grizzlies corner kick, passing to the fleeing Pack striker.
The Pack scoring barrage continued in the 67th minute with TJ Thiebaut (Sr., Mid., Pueblo, Colo.) connecting on his first goal of the year adding to the lead.
Sergio Rizo (Jr., Mid. Buckeye, Ariz.) was credited with the assist.
"Our guys played an average first half," said Stanley, "Our second half was a good response to the average play to start the game."
Trevor Hardacker (Jr., D, Phoenix, Ariz.) got his name in the box score in the 77th minute scoring on a pass from Mackenzie Paquette (Jr., D, Phoenix, Ariz.), Hardacker's first with the ThunderWolves.
"The two center backs Jack Gonzales (Sr., D, Centennial, Colo.) and Aaron Strunk (Jr., Mid., Springfield, Mo.) played well for us today," added Stanley.
The ThunderWolves finished the game with a 15-4 shot advantage.
Goalkeeper Sam Haseltine (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) earned his third shutout of the year, making one save on four shots.
"Slam (Haseltine) was not tested much, our defense cleared things up well."
CSU-Pueblo (5-3-0, 1-1-0 RMAC) returns home Friday with a matchup against MSU Denver. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Soccer Stadium.
