PUEBLO, Colo. – The CSU Pueblo men's soccer team continued its perfect start to the 2026 season Saturday as the ThunderWolves grounded the Jets of Newman University, 4-1, in their home opener at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
With the victory, CSU Pueblo improves to 3-0 on the season, while Newman falls to 1-3. The Pack scored twice in each half and received a pair of goals from Nick Cenek, while Pedro Martinez Castro and Juan Pablo Orozco Soto each found the back of the net.
CSU Pueblo wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, striking in the 10th minute. Jose Peris Gimeno helped create the opening tally, setting up Martinez Castro for the game's first goal at the 9:07 mark.
The goal was Martinez Castro's second of the season after he also scored in the Pack's 2-0 victory over Sul Ross State last weekend.
The ThunderWolves doubled their advantage in the 27th minute when Cenek stepped to the penalty spot and converted the opportunity to give the home side a 2-0 lead.
CSU Pueblo carried that two-goal cushion into halftime after controlling much of the opening period. The Pack outshot Newman 9-2 in the first 45 minutes and earned four corner kicks while limiting the Jets to just one shot on goal.
Cenek struck again in the 70th minute to push the advantage to 3-0. Gabriel Marchesoni picked up the assist on Cenek's second goal of the afternoon, completing the brace for the senior.
Newman broke through less than four minutes later and scored at the 73:20 mark to cut CSU Pueblo's lead to 3-1.
The Pack put the finishing touches on the victory in the 90th minute when Orozco Soto scored his first goal of the season. Vincent Renton assisted on the goal, which came with just 59 seconds remaining.
Cenek led the CSU Pueblo attack with a game-high five shots, all five on goal, and finished with four points on his two goals. Martinez Castro added two shots and a goal, while Peris Gimeno recorded two shots and an assist. Orozco Soto scored on his lone shot of the match.
As a team, CSU Pueblo held a 13-11 advantage in shots and put eight attempts on frame compared to four for Newman. The ThunderWolves also held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
In goal, Esteban Gonzalez played all 90 minutes and made three saves to earn his first victory of the season.
The ThunderWolves now have a full week off before returning to Gonzales Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 12 when they host Hawai'i at Hilo. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
