The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's lacrosse team wrapped up its weekend road trip Sunday with a 15-3 setback versus Lindenwood University.
With the loss, the ThunderWolves fall to 0-3 overall, while the Lions improve to 2-0 on the young season.
Despite the loss, the CSU-Pueblo defense posted season lows in goals (15) and shots (41). For the game, Lindenwood held the statistical advantage in shots (41-9), ground balls (48-20), caused turnovers (14-4) and faceoffs (18-4).
The ThunderWolves received a goal each from Garrett Palmer (Fr., Gilbert, Ariz.), Jamil Modaffari (Jr., Pen Yan, N.Y.) and Kelton Himmelberg (Jr., Centennial, Colo.). Palmer's goal moves him into a tie for the team-lead in goals for the season with three, while Modafarri and Himmelberg both found the back of the net for the first time this season.
Hunter Thompson (Fr., Greenwood Village, Colo.) tallied an assist for the Pack, giving him a team-best three on the season. Preston DeHerrera (So., Northglenn, Colo.) added his first helper of the season. DeHerrera paced the team in ground balls with four.
In between the pipes, CSU-Pueblo's Nick Richards (Fr., Henderson, Nev.) played all 60 minutes and recorded eight saves.
The Lions scored the first nine goals of the contest, before the ThunderWolves broke through with their first marker with 3:03 remaining in the second quarter. Himmelberg got the visitors on the scoreboard, whipping the ball past the goalie off of an assist from DeHerrera.
After a 5-0 run by the Lions, CSU-Pueblo closed the game by scoring two out of the final three goals. Palmer tallied an unassisted goal at the 6:23 mark of the third quarter. Modafarri notched the only goal in the final stanza, registering his first tally of the season courtesy of a Thompson assist with 6:43 remaining in regulation to make the final score 15-3.
The Pack return to action Saturday, playing host to Colorado Mesa University in the first regular-season home game in program history. First faceoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Art and Lorraine Gonzales Lacrosse Complex.
