Men's Lacrosse falls in inaugural game to Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (February 20, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's lacrosse team took to the field for its first regular-season game in program history Friday, taking on the Colorado College Tigers. The Tigers came away with the victory, downing the ThunderWolves, 24-5, at Washburn Field.

With the loss, CSU-Pueblo falls to 0-1 on the season, while the win moves CC to 2-1.

Cody Bolen (Fr., Castle Rock, Colo.) tallied two goals on the day for the Pack, including the first goal in program history at the 2:06 mark of the first quarter. Chas Welch (So., Dacula, Ga.) also added two goals, while Hunter Thompson (Greenwood Village, Colo.) added one tally and a team-high two assists.

Also notching assists for the ThunderWolves were Bolen, Jamil Modaffari (Jr., Pen Yan, N.Y.) and Garrett Palmer (Fr., Gilbert, Ariz.).

Kory Mueller (Fr., Milwaukee, Wis.) topped the Pack in ground balls with four, while Kyle Love (Fr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) had a team-best two caused turnovers.

Nick Richards (Fr., Henderson, Nev.) made eight saves between the pipes in his first collegiate appearance for the ThunderWolves.

CC finished the game with the advantage in shots, 54-13, ground balls, 34-21, faceoffs won, 19-12, and caused turnovers, 10-7.

The Tigers opened the contest on a 5-0 run, before Bolen scored the first goal in program history for CSU-Pueblo off of an assist from Thompson with 2:06 left in the first quarter.

CC tallied five more markers, extending its advantage to 10-1 with 5:37 elapsed in the second quarter.

The ThunderWolves recorded two out of the next three goals to trim the deficit to eight, at 11-3. Thompson assisted on his second goal this time setting up Welch's first score of the contest. After a Tigers' goal, Bolen found the back of the net for the second time in the game thanks to a helper from Modaffari with 6:22 remaining until halftime.

CC used its third 5-0 run of the game to take a 16-3 lead into the intermission.

The ThunderWolves struck first in the second half, tallying their fourth goal of the contest as Palmer set up Thompson for the score just 1:55 into the third quarter.

After a 4-0 scoring spurt by the Tigers, CSU-Pueblo notched their final goal of the game with 2:06 remaining in the third quarter. Welch ripped his second marker of the contest between the pipes off of an assist from Bolen.

The Tigers scored the final four goals of the game, making the final score, 24-5.

The ThunderWolves remain on the road next weekend, traveling to the Midwest for a pair of contests. CSU-Pueblo will play its first Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association matchup, facing Rockhurst Feb. 28, before squaring off against Lindenwood March 1.
