Denver, Colo. (September 19, 2014) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's soccer team opened the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference portion of its schedule at No. 8 Regis University, falling 3-2 to the Rangers on Friday.
CSU-Pueblo's Zach Davis (R-Fr., Tucson, Ariz.) scored the first goal of the contest just three minutes into the start. The goal is Davis' first of his collegiate career. Matt Marchena (Jr., Littleton, Colo.) was credited with the assist.
Despite losing the shots battle 17-15 in the game, the ThunderWolves held a slight advantage on corner kicks at 5-4.
"Our guys came out focused early," CSU-Pueblo head coach Roy Stanley said. "We created quality chances today."
Regis was led with two goals by Martin Maybin. He also was part of the third goal scored, credited with an assist.
"Maybin is one of the most dangerous forwards we have faced this season," added Stanley.
Trailing by two goals late in the game, the Pack offense kept strong when in the 89th minute, Jonny Sawyer (Sr., Aurora, Colo.) dribbled the ball down field to the far right corner of the field, passing to a trailing Mountan Mitchell (R-Jr., Kailua, Hawai'i) who connected with the back of the net, cutting into the Rangers lead at 3-2.
"Regis is a good team and we have to build off a game like this."
Sam Haseltine (R-Jr., St. Louis, MO) held strong at the goalkeeper position, making nine saves on seventeen shots from Regis.
The Pack (1-4-0, 0-1-0 RMAC) will return to Pueblo on Sunday when they welcome the Colorado School of Mines, kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Art & Lorraine Gonzales Soccer Complex.
