Colorado Springs, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – October 9, 2013) – The CSU-Pueblo men's soccer team lost to the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs by a score of 3-0 Wednesday evening.
Twelve minutes into the game, Matt Marchena (So., Littleton, Colo.) took the first shot of the night for the Pack, it went just wide of the net. Jonny Sawyer (Jr., Aurora, Colo.) and Sam Glawe (So., Allen, Texas) followed suit at the 32nd minute with their attempts to score but were both blocked.
The Mountain Lions got on the board first with an unassisted goal from inside the box by UCCS midfielder Sebastian Hertzberg.
CSU-Pueblo net-minder Sam Haseltine (So., St. Louis, Mo.) stayed busy at the net with five saves in the first half alone. Despite the defensive stops the Pack remained down by one going into the half.
Both teams returned to the field eager to score and at the 55th minute Sebastian Hertzberg earned his second goal of the night for the Mountain Lions.
Less than a minute later the Pack took it down field and set up the shot for Abel Corral (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.) which hit the crossbar. Continuing the Pack's offensive drive, Rene Chacon (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) took a shot at the 66th minute that went wide, retrieved the ball and took another shot that was blocked.
The ThunderWolves continued to make passes and create opportunities, they just couldn't find the back of the net.
At the 80th minute, Sebastian Hertzberg scored his third goal of the game insuring UCCS the win.
The Mountain Lions had ten corners in the game compared to only three for the Pack, and outshot the ThunderWolves 14 to ten.
"Our effort wasn't bad, but it wasn't great," said head coach Roy Stanley. "Our concentration wasn't where it needs to be."
Said Stanley, "We struggled offensively and defensively we made some errors." "We can't blame it [the loss] on any one thing." "We just have to do better with being more attentive, skillful, and aware."
With this loss CSU-Pueblo falls to 1-9-1 on the season and 0-6-1 in the RMAC.
The Pack will travel to Lakewood on Friday afternoon to face the 2-8 Colorado Christian University Cougars, kickoff is at 11a.m.
