LAKEWOOD, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Oct. 11, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo displayed its best offensive game of the season, buoyed by two goals from Dustin Geist (Sr., Durango, Colo.), but it wasn't enough to earn the win as it lost 3-2 to Colorado Christian.
The ThunderWolves showed offensive firepower throughout the game, creating many chances. The ThunderWolves got plenty of opportunities in front of the net, garnering 14 corner kicks compared to just four for Colorado Christian, but the Pack struggled to get quality chances on goal.
Of the ThunderWolves' 13 shots, only four fell on goal, and two found its way to the back of the net. Geist chipped his first goal over the hands of the keeper in the game's 46th minute, then struck again in the 70th minute from long range, using a Matt Marchena (So., Littleton, Colo.) pass to hit from 25 yards out.
But Geists goals and the offensive play was all for naught as the Pack got in a big hole only.
Defensive breakdowns helped create two goals for the Cougars in the first half as Colorado Christian managed to get 14 shots on the Pack, with seven landing on goal and three finding the back of the net. As a result, the ThunderWolves never led in an affair that, to the naked eye, seemed to be in the Pack's favor.
"It was our best attacking day of the year and we finally played unselfishly up front," Pack coach Roy Stanley said. "But we're still giving up goals defensively. We have situations like we had today, where [one of the goals] we had numbers around the ball, but we couldn't deal with it and they scored."
Despite the loss and the team's recent struggles, Stanley said the team had the proper attitude Friday.
"Our energy and effort were good," Stanley said, "and I proud of them for those things. But it's still disappointing."
CSU-Pueblo will return to the pitch next weekend when it hosts Fort Lewis in a 4:30 kickoff for the Pack's annual "Kickin' Cancer" event at the Rawlings Soccer Complex, part of the University's "Pink Week" celebration.
