Pack opens up conference play with 1-0 victory
PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – Sept. 16, 2011) – Putting behind a woeful start was made a lot easier Friday night when the ThunderWolves opened up the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Adams State. The Pack delighted the home crowd, which was also the kick off to Parents Weekend, for their first win of the season.
The first half, an improved Grizzlies team from a year ago, set the tone early with their physical play and strong defense. The Pack matched the Grizzlies though and fought tooth and nail to create offensive opportunities.
The half almost ended in a 0-0 tie but with one minute and nine seconds remaining Jonny Sawyer (Fr., Aurora, Colo.) took a nice pass fromDenim Douglas (RSo., Greenville, Tex.) that he tucked away to the near side to go up 1-0.
Defensively the Pack was solid all night allowing little opportunities to Adams State behind a solid defensive back line and goalkeeper Jacob Blum (Sr., Peoria, Ariz.). The team bunkered down in the second half but still managed to outshoot the Grizzlies 24-10.
"It was a total team effort. Obviously credit to Sawyer with the goal but as a team we created great opportunities," coach Roy Stanley said.
Last season the Pack traveled to Alamosa to open up the conference season, earning a 1-0 win as well. The win was en route to a RMAC playoff appearance.
"Thought Adams State made some great strides from last year and are an improved team. They deserve credit for that," Stanley said.
The Pack will get a tough test Sunday when the #18 Fort Lewis Skyhawks come to town. The game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the Rawlings Soccer Complex.
