UC-Colorado Springs 4, CSU-Pueblo 3
The ThunderWolves' chances to take the 2009-10 Steel and Silver
Series title from UCCS took a big hit Friday as the Pack lost their
third straight, falling 4-3 to UCCS.
The loss drops the Pack to 4-4 on the season and 0-3 in RMAC
play.
CSU-Pueblo saw a 1-0 lead after a Sam Henritze (Sr.,
Scottsdale, Ariz.) evaporate when UCCS added two goals
nine minutes apart midway through the first period. The Pack
tied it back up when Robert Kinsey (So.,
Denver, Colo.) took a feed from Johnny Valenzuela
(Sr., Las Cruces, N.M.) to make the game 2-2.
But the Mountain Lions took the win out of Pack's sails by
scoring immediately, netting a goal just 35 seconds later to take
the lead for good.
Pack coach Roy Stanley said the difference was critical errors
in the Pack's defensive end.
"We had a lot of defensive errors that cost us and we got
punished for them," Stanley said. "We're still trying to
regain our full sense of holding on the ball that we had to start
the season."
"But overall I felt we worked pretty hard today and had good
energy and spirit," he said. "We just need to get back on the
winning track shortly."
One ThunderWolf equalled a school record in the game -
Erik
Anderson (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) scored a goal in his
fifth consecutive game, equalling a school record in consecutive
goals. Andersen is now in the CSU-Pueblo record books
alongside Craig Miller (2002) and Fabricio Collella (1993),
each of whom netted goals in five straight games.
The loss puts CSU-Pueblo in a big hole in the "Steel and Silver
Series," the all-sports competition between CSU-Pueblo and
UCCS. CSU-Pueblo is currently trailing in the series 5-0, due
to head-to-head losses in men's soccer, volleyball and men's
golf. The Steel & Silver Series awards points to the
winner of games between the schools in seven women's and three
men's sports and a five-point bonus to the university whose
student-athletes have the best grades. In the three years that the
series has been in existence, UCCS has won the series each year.
The ThunderWolves will continue its road trip in Lakewood Sunday
when it faces Colorado Christian.
