DENVER, Colo. - The fourth-annual Sam Batey Sr. Legacy Golf Tournament (or the Developing Champions Golf Tournament) at Denver City Park Golf Course, which was held on Friday, July 24, 2026, continues to provide endowment funds for Colorado State University Pueblo student-athletes named in honor of the 2012 Pack Athletics Hall of Famer. 

With the Colorado capital city skyline and the mountains of the Centennial State in the background, the morning event concluded with junior men's basketball guard Quis Davis (Denver, Colo./Northeastern JC) being named the recipient of the Sam Batey Sr. Legacy Scholarship at an afternoon luncheon following the conclusion of the golf tournament.
 
With the passing of Batey in mid-July 2021, his family of Barbara and children Sam Jr. and Dana created the endowed scholarship in Sam's name, with the recipient being chosen from a candidate pool of student-athletes at CSU Pueblo who are from the Denver metro area and compete in basketball, golf, lacrosse, or tennis.

CSU Pueblo Vice President for Athletics and Strategic Partnerships Dr. Paul Plinske and second-year head men's basketball coach Zach Ruebesam presented the Sam Batey Sr. Legacy Scholarship to Davis on Friday afternoon.

Davis is the third CSU Pueblo student-athlete to receive the Sam Batey Sr. Legacy Scholarship, as former three-time All-American women's basketball player Alisha Little received the scholarship in 2023-24 and 2024-25, while former men's basketball player Dylan Sanders earned the scholarship in 2025-26.

Davis enters his first season with the Pack in 2026-27 after playing the past two seasons at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo. In his two seasons at Northeastern, he earned Second-Team All-Conference honors and was third in Player of the Year voting in 2025-26 and finished his career ranked in the Top 10 in assists in program history. He dished out 190 assists in two seasons and averaged 4.3 assists per game.

He scored nearly 600 career points in two seasons with the Plainsmen and also pulled down 194 rebounds and collected 81 steals. During the 2025-26 season, he played in 18 games and made 17 starts and averaged 15.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game and shot 51.1 percent from the field. As a redshirt freshman in 2024-25, he played in and started 26 games and averaged 11.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game and shot 40.8 percent from the field.

Before playing at Northeastern, he began his collegiate career at Casper (Wyo.) College in 2022-23, but did not see any action.

As a prep player, Davis, who is expected to major in Sociology at CSU Pueblo, lettered in basketball for four years at Denver East High School. He earned First-Team All-State honors as a senior after leading Denver East to the Final Four of the 2022 CHSAA State Tournament and was an Honorable Mention All-State selection as a junior. In his high school career, he averaged 14.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 4.1 steals per game.

As for the golf tournament, the top two foursome teams combined to shoot 31-under par on the par-70, 6,232-yard Denver City Park layout as the team of Pack baseball head coach Bobby Applegate, Eddie Acuna, Luis Contreras and Doug Finley took home first place with a 17-under par score of 53, while the foursome of Todd Sandstedt, Russ Dampier, Scott Bliek and William Kane were the runners-up with a score of 14-under par 56. The Sandstedt team tied the team of Jim Brooks, Brad Ranson, Wayne Gordon and Tyler McDonough, who also shot a 56, but the Sandstedt team won on a scorecard playoff as they hit a hole-in-one on the No. 9 hole, while Brooks' team scored a three on the par-5 hole.
